Schwartz, Joseph J.

(1899-1974)
   American communal leader and scholar. He was born in Russia, and went to the US in 1907. During World War II he negotiated the rescue of Jews from Germany and the occupied territories. After the war he directed the transfer of Jews to Israel from Europe, North Africa and the Middle East; he also helped Jewish refugees emigrate to the US, Canada and Latin America. He served as director-general of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, vice-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, and vice-president of the State of Israel Bond Organization.
